This is risk-management arithmetic, not a trade recommendation — it says how large a position would be consistent with the limit you set, never whether to take it. Actual losses can exceed the stop-loss if the price gaps, and charges are not included here.
Estimated from the numbers you entered — not a projection of guaranteed returns.
About this calculator
Position sizing works backwards from the loss you are willing to take. Fix the rupee amount you will risk, divide by the distance from entry to stop-loss, and the quantity falls out. It is a constraint on size, nothing more.
Formula
- Rupee risk = Capital × (Risk per trade % ÷ 100)
- Risk per share = | Entry price − Stop-loss |
- Maximum shares = ⌊ Rupee risk ÷ Risk per share ⌋
- Capital required = Maximum shares × Entry price
Frequently asked questions
Why is the answer capped by my capital?
A tight stop-loss can make the risk limit permit more shares than you can actually pay for. The calculator reports both and uses the lower of the two.
What risk per trade should I use?
That is a personal decision and we do not recommend a number. The calculator simply applies whatever percentage you enter.
Are charges included?
No. Brokerage and taxes add to the loss on a stopped-out trade — the trading charges calculator estimates them.
