About this calculator
Your buy price is not your break-even. Charges apply on both legs of a trade, so the position has to move a little in your favour before the profit and loss turns positive. This solves for the exact sell price that clears every charge on the round trip.
Formula
- Break-even sell price = (Buy value + Total round-trip charges) ÷ Quantity
- Charges on the sell leg depend on the sell price, so the break-even is solved iteratively
- Move required % = ((Break-even price − Buy price) ÷ Buy price) × 100
Frequently asked questions
Why is intraday break-even usually lower?
Delivery pays STT on both legs at 0.1% and attracts a DP charge on the sell, while intraday pays STT only on the sell at a lower rate and no DP charge. Intraday brokerage, though, is usually higher than delivery brokerage.
Does this include the tax on my gains?
No. It covers transaction charges only. Capital gains tax is assessed separately on your total gains for the year.
Why does the sell price appear on both sides of the sum?
Several charges are a percentage of the sell turnover, so a higher break-even price itself costs more. The calculator iterates until the two sides agree to the paise.
