This projection assumes a constant rate of return for the whole period. It is an estimate only — actual returns vary, are not guaranteed, and nothing here is investment advice.

Estimated from the numbers you entered — not a projection of guaranteed returns.

About this calculator

A rupee received years from now is worth less than a rupee today, because today's rupee can be invested in the meantime. Present value discounts a future amount back at the rate you could otherwise earn — the same relation as future value, solved the other way.

Formula

  • PV = FV ÷ (1 + r)^n
  • Discount factor = 1 ÷ (1 + r)^n

Frequently asked questions

What discount rate should I use?

Usually the return you could realistically earn on comparable, similarly risky money. A higher rate discounts the future amount more heavily.

Can I use this to size a goal?

It tells you the single amount needed today. If you would rather invest monthly towards it, use the goal SIP calculator.
