Rates and statutory charges change. Verify current charges with your broker, the exchange and SEBI before relying on these figures. Figures are estimates for planning, not a contract note, and nothing here is advice to buy or sell. STT rates are set by the Finance Act and have been revised more than once — check the current rate before relying on the F&O lines.

About this calculator
STT is a tax on the value of a securities transaction, collected by the broker at the time of trade and paid to the government. It is charged on turnover, so it is payable whether the trade made money or lost it. Delivery trades are taxed on both legs; intraday only on the sell.
Formula
- Delivery STT = 0.1% × Buy value + 0.1% × Sell value
- Intraday STT = 0.025% × Sell value only
- Turnover = Quantity × Price
Frequently asked questions
Is STT charged even if I make a loss?
Yes. STT is levied on the value of the transaction, not on profit.
Can I claim STT against my tax?
STT paid on trades treated as business income is generally allowable as an expense, while for capital gains it is not deductible from the gain. Rules change — check with a tax adviser.
What happens if I buy intraday but take delivery?
The trade is taxed as delivery, at 0.1% on both legs, because the position was not squared off the same day.
