About this calculator
Since July 2020 stamp duty on securities has been uniform across states and is collected by the broker or the clearing corporation on the buy leg only. Delivery attracts five times the intraday rate, which is one reason a delivery round trip costs more than an intraday one.
Formula
- Delivery stamp duty = 0.015% × Buy value
- Intraday stamp duty = 0.003% × Buy value
- Sell legs attract no stamp duty
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay stamp duty when I sell?
No. Under the current uniform regime stamp duty is levied on the buy side only.
Does the rate depend on my state?
Not since the July 2020 amendment. A single nationwide rate applies and is collected centrally.
Is GST charged on stamp duty?
No. Stamp duty is a tax in its own right; GST applies to brokerage and exchange fees.
